Why I Built the LensLid: A Better Lens Cap for Real Shooters

The Inspiration
LensLid was inspired by vintage screw-in metal lens caps—the kind Canon and Nikon made decades ago when things were built to last. They were simple, durable, and didn’t pop off if you looked at them wrong. But as nice as those old caps were, they weren’t designed for modern workflows—or modern glass.
I wanted to take that same philosophy—metal, threaded, dependable—and build something fit for today’s creators.
The Frustration
Plastic clip-on caps? They're fine... until they’re not. I got tired of:
- Losing caps in my bag
- Having them pop off in high paced situations
- Digging through gear to find the right lens—or labeling them with masking tape like it’s a student film set
- Taking ND filters off just to re-cap a lens
And then came mirrorless and all the lenses started looking the same. Peek a Sony GM 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm and you can't tell which is which. It's like looking at identical twins. In the field, when your client is waiting for you to swap lenses you don’t have time to second guess.
The Fix
So I made the LensLid:
- Screw-in secure. Won’t fall off or fail when you need it.
- Bold, laser-engraved ID. Read your lens label without touching the lens.
- Works with filters. Leave your ND on—just cap it and go.
- Seriously tough. We’ve stress-tested these things in ways no lens should ever endure—because protection should mean more than just “better than plastic.”
